Rise in anxiety and depression in teenagers – is there a link to use of Smartphones?

I, like many other parents of teenage children, have been concerned for some time about the addictive nature of modern technology, especially smartphones and social media apps, and the impact on the emotional and mental well being of young people. A look around any restaurant or public place will show that many adults also appear addicted to their smartphones to the exclusion of the people and the world around them but the impact on young people is, to me at least, especially worrying. This is why I have developed my new approach to the treatment of technology addiction using hypnosis.

This article in The Economist(USA edition) published in 2017 makes interesting reading for anyone who shares my concerns about Smartphone use. It shows there is no definitive causative proof as yet but the scientific evidence is growing to support anecdotal evidence and our own everyday experience of Smartphone use by people around us.

Primary school brings in hypnotherapist to help pupils relax for tests

A report in the Daily Telegraph last month tells how Holmer Lake Primary School in Telford, Shropshire called in a hypnotherapist to help Year 6 pupils deal with the pressures of SATs.   The children were taught breathing and other techniques and the head teacher said that it has helped pupils to achieve record SATs results as well as enabling the children to feel happier, calmer and much more self-confident too. If only schools in Sheffield and elsewhere were so enlightened!  I still fervently hope and dream that one day all children are taught from an early age how to use their mind well, boost their ability to learn and be happy and prevent problems such as anxiety, low self esteem and lack of self confidence from occurring in the first place.

Why Stress Makes You Fat

An interesting and useful article by Dr Michael Mosley in January http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42788280  In my experience, people who come to me for weight loss often have anxiety, stress and issues and of course hypnotherapy treatment then must also involve addressing these unmet needs as well as changing eating habits.  Impact of poor sleep is more significant than most people recognise.

Daily Mail – Hypnotherapy is helping to beat my chronic insomnia (after YEARS of sleepless nights)

Not that it is a paper that I personally would choose to read but journalist Bel Mooney describes how after trying different insomnia treatments over her long years as an insomniac, hypnotherapy has made the difference.  A useful read for anyone who is wondering if hypnotherapy could help with their own sleepless nights. Overcoming insomnia is not as hopeless as it might seem.

Why is hypnotherapy so effective in helping someone to stop smoking?

To smokers, vaping seems to be a healthier alternative to smoking cigarettes (though many still vap and smoke!) but in my view, the truth that E-cigarettes are just the latest in a long line of products that take advantage of the fact that smokers are desperate to quit – in fact, a 2011 study from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed: 70% of smokers want to quit…….56% tried to quit……But only a paltry 6% managed to quit!

Why is that? I think it’s because the most used options available – going cold turkey, nicotine gum and patches as well as e-cigarettes – all share the same fundamental flaw, one that as a hypnotherapist I am very much aware of. The problem is none of them address where addiction really lies – the unconscious mind!

Influencing the unconscious mind for the better is what hypnotherapy is all about. That’s why I know that instead of buying expensive and sometimes explosive products in an attempt to quit, a smoker could visit me and quickly untangle the desire to smoke from their unconscious – freeing them to live a healthier, wealthier, longer life.

Want to stop being addicted to nicotine? My 2 session stop smoking hypnotherapy service now costs just £200.

Top 5 Top 5 Behaviours For Preventing or Addressing The Symptoms of Chronic Disease –

Recent Research by the USA Centre For Disease Control has shown that the following make a massive difference if you want to live longer and be free of chronic diseases:

  • No smoking;
  • Consuming little or no alcohol;
  • Engaging in regular physical activity;
  • Maintaining normal body weight;
  • Getting enough sleep.

Seems obvious when you read the list however in 2013, they estimate that only 6.3% of Americans fulfill all five of these health-promoting behaviours. Now, I don’t know about you but I would be surprised if the figure for the UK was not as equally low and alarming!

The good news is that hypnotherapy can help someone establish and maintain each and all of these top 5 behaviours – so if you want to improve your health just give me a call on 07976 701223 to discuss how hypnotherapy with me can make this possible. All calls are in confidence and without obligation to have treatment, in other words it is a free, private consultation.

Why it is better to be human than to be right

I came across this interesting article on the reasons why being human is better than being right (a 5 minute read) and thought it would be helpful to share. It is always helpful to remember to remind oneself that we are far from perfect and the desire to be right can limit us much more than we think.

Mindfulness Exercises For Living in the Present

Here is a useful free resource for anyone interested in developing mindfulness –
https://www.developgoodhabits.com/mindfulness-exercises/

The activities can be fitted into everyday life, the majority do not involve meditating and some may not have an obvious connection to what is commonly seen as mindfulness practice, but it is useful list nonetheless. You will find that instructions are short and easy to follow.

I have often recommended exercise nos 9,10 and 26 to clients – for example number 9 , the simple act of taking a good drink of water soon after waking up, is something that most people do not do and are missing out on the positive difference this can make.

Don’t let the fact there is 71 activities put you off! These are broken down into morning, afternoon and evening exercises. Why not choose 2 or 3 that appeal most and give it these a go until you are ready to add more exercise into your daily routine.

Hypnosis Myths and Misconceptions – No 6 of 6: Does hypnosis work instantly?

It really depends on the issue that needs addressing in hypnosis. For example, I can often treat a phobia in a single session but issues such as depression and panic attacks may take 3 or 4 sessions. It is also helpful to reinforce and sustain changes, and so in addition to using the recordings I provide for use at home, face to face sessions are spread over an appropriate period to ensure success.
