Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need? How long is a session?

The number of times varies depending on the nature of the problem, your needs, the work you do to help yourself in between sessions and the outcomes you are looking for. I have helped people overcome a phobia in a single session yet others with the same phobia have taken 2 or 3 sessions. My aim is always to get you to be how you what to be as quickly as possible and for you to sustain and build on the improvements long after our work together is done.  Generally most issues can be treated successfully in 2-5 sessions (which is much faster than the 10 or many more sessions that other therapies such as psychotherapy involve).   My clients usually can see some improvement after the first session (or completely if it is a single session treatment). In contrast to other therapists, my sessions last 1.5 hours rather than the standard one hour so that people need less sessions overall and get great results faster.

What is hypnosis?

It is a special state of mind, a deeply relaxing experience  which enables you to make changes to the way you think, feel and act. How? By allowing you to bypass the critical, judging, analytical, justifying conscious mind and access your subconscious mind, the dominant amazingly powerful part of your mind. Hypnosis simply allows you to tap into a rich reservoir of unconsious processes which govern your emotions, habits, beliefs, desires, attitudes, imagination, motivation and all your bodily functions. All the many things you can do without thinking about it all from breathing, walking and talking to driving a car, opening a door and having a shower.

Think of hypnosis as a key that unlocks the mind. It allows you to access mental programmes running in the background, the source coding as it were and then edit and change what needs changing for you. That may be something you want to stop doing, start doing, do differently in order to be how you want to be.

What does it feel like to be in a hypnotic trance?

While in a trance you will feel relaxed physically and mentally, nothing bothers you and you may be unaware of your surroundings. It feels like you are in a dream yet you do not become unconscious and can respond to instructions and suggestions  In this relaxed state great changes are possible as your subconscious mind is more able to accept ideas and suggestion that are useful for you. . Fears, phobias and habits exist in the subconscious and hypnotherapy can help the subconscious mind overcome them.

Hypnosis is such a natural state, like a daydream, that most clients feel deeply relaxed and refreshed after each session. And scientific research shows that hypnosis does have a real brain effect – click here for an interesting article on this subject.
